Shifu Stephen Ip 葉子宏 (Ip Chi Wang) was born in Hong Kong in 1974. He grew up learning several kung fu styles with his main focus being Baji Quan (which includes Pigua) and Northern Shaolin Inner Gate Eagle Claw kung fu (which is different from Eagle Claw Fanzi Quan) . He also learned Yang Tai Chi Chuan and Hsing Yi, Dabei Quan and Karate among other martial arts. Later on, he studied the Henan Xin Yi Liu He Quan.
Shifu Ip started learning Baji Quan under Grandmaster Zhao Qi You (趙起有). Zhao Qi You was a student of Great Grandmaster Wei Hong Bin (魏鴻賓) (1909-1975), father of our Grandmaster Wei Jiu Ru (魏九如). GM Zhao passed away in 2000. Shifu Ip continued his apprenticeship with Grandmaster Wei Jiu Ru.
Therefore, Shifu Ip is now a practitioner of the 8th generation of Luotuan hard frame Baji Quan, the pure and authentic traditional system of Baji Quan.
Shifu Ip is also recognized as an International Master, 7th dan, by the Canadian National Wushu Association and he is also a level 1 judge in Sanda (Chinese boxing).
In his personal life, Shifu Ip is also a Shugendō and Mikkyo (esoteric Buddhism) Priest, the North American representative and head instructor of the lineage in Chinese society of this religion. However, his martial arts teachings are kept completely separated from his religious beliefs and rituals.

Dans sa vie personnelle, Shifu Ip est également un prêtre Shugendō et Mikkyo (bouddhisme ésotérique), le représentant nord-américain et l'instructeur principal de la lignée de cette religion dans la société chinoise. Cependant, ses enseignements d'arts martiaux sont maintenus complètement séparés de ses croyances et rituels religieux.
Shifu Ip recorded this video of him performing the second form of Baji Quan (八极拳 Baji Quan). It is followed by some traditional conditioning exercises on a tree. Baji Quan practitioners are known for their very robust bodies.

Shihing Jean-Bernard (aka "JB") (杰剑熊 - Jié Jiàn Xióng) is responsible for the Montreal branch of Baji Quan Canada. Born in 1974, he started doing martial arts at the age of 10. He practiced taekwondo (under the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF)) under Sah bum nim Jacques Froment. He trained for about 10 years and earned his black belt in 1991. During that same period, he also had the opportunity to give TKD classes to young kids and teenagers.
In the late 90s, he tried a few other martial arts styles such as Judo and Aikido, but also got introduced to Chinese martial arts for the first time, which was not really common in the region of Québec city back then. This is where he developed a true passion for the Chinese culture and the various martial arts styles coming from this country.
Over the years, he accumulated several years of training in Hung Gar and Wing Chun and tried a little bit of karate in between (something he tried with his oldest son). He also had the opportunity to give Hung Gar classes in the early 2000s.
However, in 2008, he had the good fortune to discover this new martial arts school about to open on the south shore of Montreal that was still looking for a name (that later became the “Vajra Gym”). This is where he met Shifu Ip for the first time and got introduced to the old traditional art of Baji Quan Kung Fu. He discovered a whole new branch of Chinese martial arts that he didn’t know about and literally fell in love with this style.
He trained with Shifu Ip for about 2 years before he moved to Toronto. After a few years of staying in contact with Shifu Ip, he decided to create a new training group in Montreal under his guidance. Shihing JB founded this group in 2017 and the official launch was done in January 2018 with the visit of Shifu Ip for a seminar.
With the permission of Shifu Ip, Shihing JB also trains in English boxing and have the opportunity to share a space at the Gladiateur Gym, a boxing school in La Prairie, Québec (south shore of Montreal). This is where the Baji Quan classes of the Montreal branch are now given.
The term "Shihing" means “senior male classmate”. As the oldest active student of Shifu Ip at the moment, he can train beginners and show them the basics of the style, while continuing to learn from Shifu Ip on a regular basis.
On September 23, 2022, Shifu Ip officially gave the Chinese name 杰剑熊 - Jié Jiàn Xióng to Jean-Bernard.

Shihing Jean-Bernard (alias "JB") (杰剑熊 - Jié Jiàn Xióng) est responsable de la branche montréalaise de Baji Quan Canada. Né en 1974, il a commencé à pratiquer les arts martiaux à l'âge de 10 ans. Il a pratiqué le taekwondo (de la Fédération internationale de taekwondo (ITF)) sous la direction de Sah bum nim Jacques Froment. Il s'est entraîné pendant environ 10 ans et a obtenu sa ceinture noire en 1991. Pendant cette même période, il a également eu l'occasion de donner des cours de TKD à de jeunes enfants et adolescents.
À la fin des années 90, il a expérimenté quelques styles d'arts martiaux comme le judo et l'aïkido, mais il s'est aussi initié pour la première fois aux arts martiaux chinois, qui n'étaient pas vraiment communs dans la région de Québec à cette époque. C'est là qu'il a développé une véritable passion pour la culture chinoise et les différents styles d'arts martiaux provenant de ce pays.
Au fil des ans, il a cumulé plusieurs années d'entraînement en Hung Gar et en Wing Chun et a exploré un peu le karaté (activité qu'il a faite avec son fils aîné). Il a également eu l'occasion de donner des cours de Hung Gar au début des années 2000.
Cependant, en 2008, il a eu la chance de découvrir une nouvelle école d'arts martiaux sur le point d'ouvrir sur la rive sud de Montréal, celle-ci se cherchait alors encore un nom (qui est plus tard devenu le " Vajra Gym "). C'est là qu'il a rencontré Shifu Ip pour la première fois et qu'il a été initié à l'art traditionnel ancien du Baji Quan Kung Fu. Il a ainsi découvert toute nouvelle branche des arts martiaux chinois qu'il ne connaissait pas et est tombé littéralement amoureux de ce style.
Il s'est entraîné avec Shifu Ip pendant environ deux ans avant que ce dernier ne déménage à Toronto. Après quelques années à rester en contact avec Shifu Ip, il a décidé de créer un nouveau groupe d'entraînement à Montréal sous sa direction. Shihing JB a fondé ce groupe en 2017 et le lancement officiel a été fait en janvier 2018 avec la visite de Shifu Ip pour un séminaire.
Avec la permission de Shifu Ip, Shihing JB s'entraîne également en boxe anglaise et il a l'opportunité de partager un espace au Gladiateur Gym, une école de boxe à La Prairie, Québec (rive sud de Montréal). C'est là que sont maintenant donnés les cours de Baji Quan de la branche de Montréal.
Le terme "Shihing" signifie "collègue de classe senior". À l’heure actuelle, en tant que plus ancien élève actif de Shifu Ip, il peut former des débutants et leur montrer les bases du style, tout en continuant à apprendre de Shifu Ip sur une base régulière.
Le 23 septembre 2022, Shifu ip donna officiellement le nom chinois 杰剑熊 - Jié Jiàn Xióng à Jean-Bernard.

Wei Hongbin (1909-1975) was a professional martial artist from Luotuan, southeast of Changzhou. Wei Hongbin was very smart, at the age of 6, he went to the martial arts practice room to imitate his older brothers in practicing martial arts, and was discovered by his grandmaster, Zhang Jingxing. Master Zhang thought that Wei Hongbin would have an amazing talent and martial career in the future. He also let him become the disciple of his son, “Great Spear” Zhang Yuheng.
Wei Hongbin (1909-1975) était un artiste martial professionnel originaire de Luotuan, au sud-est de Changzhou. Wei Hongbin était très brillant, à l'âge de 6 ans seulement, il s'est rendu dans la salle d'entraînement d’arts martiaux pour imiter ses grands frères dans la pratique des arts martiaux, et a été découvert par son grand maître, Zhang Jingxing. Wei Hongbin was smart and clever and deeply loved by Zhang Yuheng, Han Huachen, Li Shuwen and visiting friends. He was brought along in many places as a martial arts junior attendant. The disciples of Zhang Yuheng were known for their very strict training, their Baji Quan foundation was very strong.

In 1921, when he was 12 years old, Wei Hongbin followed Li Shuwen and Huo Diange to Fengtian. Wei was Li Shuwen's martial arts junior attendant for 3 years and trained in Xu Lanzhou Army. From 1925 to 1927, he followed Li Shuwen, Huo Diange in Tianjin for advanced training in Li Jinglin Army. He focused a lot on the training of the horse stance with Huo Qingyun, Gao Xiangting, Liu Ziming, Bian Tingjie, etc. They had to practice horse stance for 2 hours daily to develop a very strong foundation of the lower body. Then, the power that was generated in their Baji Quan was powerful as a thunderstorm, which would make the training room shaking and trembling.
En 1921, alors qu'il avait 12 ans, Wei Hongbin suivit Li Shuwen et Huo Diange à Fengtian. Wei était l'assistant junior en arts martiaux de Li Shuwen pendant 3 ans et s'est entraîné dans l'armée de Xu Lanzhou. In 1927 Wei Hongbin followed his eldest Baji brother, Huo Diange, into Zhang garden to protect the Emperor Puyi as his personal bodyguard.

In 1929, Wei Hongbin went to Nanjing and Hangzhou in the service of “God of Spear” Li Shuwen. He was then hired by Zhang Zhijiang, the director of the Central Chinese Martial Arts Academy, to become an instructor for the junior classes. He continued his studies under Sifu Han Huashen and also studied Pigua and Tongbeiquan with his young Baji (& pigua) uncle, Ma Yingtu.
En 1929, Wei Hongbin se rend à Nanjing et Hangzhou au service de "Dieu de la Lance" Li Shuwen. Il est ensuite engagé par Zhang Zhijiang, le directeur de l'Académie centrale des arts martiaux chinois, pour devenir instructeur des classes juniors. Il poursuit ses études auprès de Sifu Han Huashen et étudie également le Pigua et le Tongbeiquan avec son jeune oncle de Baji (& pigua), Ma Yingtu.

In 1931, 23-year-old Wei Hongbin returned to his hometown to visit his relatives, accompanied by his teacher "God Spear" Li Shuwen to go to the Cang County. Li taught Xia He Yi, a regimental leader of the big spear. At that time, people of Yanshan and Cang County who had a good level of spear technique often came to visit Wei Hongbin to challenge him and test their skills with him. Visitors were always really impressed by his high proficiency with the great spear.

In 1933, Wei Hongbin served his master, Zhang Yuheng, as a teacher at the Central Chinese Martial Arts Academy. In 1935, he was recommended by the Central CMA Academy to be a national martial arts instructor in the Zhanshutang Department of the 81st Division of the Shandong National Army, stationed in Shandong Wei County (now known as Weifang).
En 1933, Wei Hongbin a servi son maître, Zhang Yuheng, en tant professeur à l'Académie centrale des arts martiaux chinois.
